No matter where you look, and even in places that you do not look, you will find all sorts of connectors and bolts and nuts and screws and countless other little doodads that keep everything in our lives together. Just think about what your life would be like without the simple, yet omnipresent, screw. Literally everything in your life would fall apart around you. But there are other pieces of hardware located all around you, making your life deceptively easier. Take a look at some of those.
1. Cable Gland
More commonly known as a cable connector here in the States, the cable gland has been designed to attach cables to equipment, while relieving strain and making the connection specific to the type of cable and device. They can be used to work with electric cables or provide water proof connection and passage as well.
2. Wire Combs
These devices keep wires inside of cords organized. It separates the wires for safety purposes and works in conjunction with something like electrical conduit. Conduit is tubing for wires that can safely transfer energy.
3. Nylon Nuts
These can be found anywhere from factories to underneath your toilet. They are often utilized with machines that are frequently taken apart. They can be cheaper than metal nuts, and their material makes them more durable to being screwed and unscrewed regularly.
Depending on the size, these can be applied to things as big as sheet metal to such fine detailed work as a circuit board. They can be made of metal or plastic, and simply act as a really solid barrier between two surfaces. For instance, for cooling purposes, a standoff can be used to elevate a circuit board from its base.
Lift off hinges can be found on many a door. Rather than using a hinge that is one solid piece, it makes the separating of the hinge pieces as easy as picking up on the door. This can be used for doors that require they be taken off regularly, they are easier to install since you do not need to lift and hold a heavy door while screwing them in, and they are even used on small refrigerator doors in food service so that the door can be easily removed and cleaned.
You never stop to think about it, but life would be impossible to live with as much ease if we did not have the little hardware dotted through our lives. When you feel overwhelmed in life, take a moment to breathe and appreciate the little things. Like sunsets, chirping birds, and lift off hinges.
